Unguja Resort - Zanzibar

Zanzibar

"The lure of the 'Spice islands' is legendary. From the exotic Stone Town with its fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets, to palm-fringed beaches and pristine coral reefs, the archipelago is a complete changes of pace from the mainland with which it is linked as part of the United Republic of Tanzania." (lonely planet Tanzania).

Zanzibar archipelago is made of Zanzibar island (Unguja), Pemba to the north and many smaller islands.

The mystical island of Zanzibar is situated 30 km from Tanzania mainland and opposite of Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar Town on the west coast of the island is the most important settlement. The oldest part is known as Stone Town and is a World Heritage Site.

All through history Zanzibar has been an important centre with trade links to the Far East, Arabia, African mainland and later Europe. This history is clearly reflected in the people and culture you will meet.

Fishing and agriculture are the main economic activities on Zanzibar. Cloves is still an important export product but tourism becomes more important every year. The government of Zanzibar is well aware of the special atmosphere of Zanzibar. It promotes environmental and cultural responsible tourism.

Being near the equator Zanzibar has warm weather all year around. The warmest period is in December. On the coast the sea breeze pleasantly cools the summer heat. Short rains can occur in November, long rains are around April. The seawater is warm and always comfortable.

Zanzibar has its own international airport with good connections to Europe and other destinations. From Europe you fly to Nairobi (Kenya), Arusha or Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). Then onwards to Zanzibar about one and a half hour from Nairobi or Arusha and about thirty minutes from Dar.

From Zanzibar International Airport you will be welcomed by our driver who will take you for a one hour scenic drive to Unguja Diving & Resort.

It is also possible to reach Zanzibar by ferry. From Dar es Salaam there are slow and fast ferry services several times a day.
